Holly Overton is a Brooklyn-based painter and musician from Nags Head, NC. She is currently in the MFA program for oil painting at New York Studio School, and has a BFA in studio art from Parsons School of Design. Her work is about the performance of painting and the space where performance happens. Illusions of space are psychological and sensual, populated with ambiguous forms and dynamic movement of planes. She disrupts the space with hand prints, brush marks, kisses, glitter, scraping, symbols and words. Her surface sings, “I am here!”
She has exhibited in Bowery Gallery (NY), Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (NY), Visionary Projects (NY), PARADICE PALASE (NY), Calico Gallery (NY), Millennium Film Workshop (NY), Schema Projects (NY), Dia Chelsea (NY), Union Docs (NY), Bushel Collective (NY), Blah Blah Gallery (PA), Museum of Modern Art (NY), and was curated by Joshua Citarella for Do Not Research at Lower Cavity (MA). She was a recipient of the LCU Fund of Women’s Education in 2024-25. She teaches workshops and classes at various cultural institutions including Millennium Film Workshop (NY) and Calvino Studio (NC). She was a teaching artist and artist-in-residence at Mendocino Art Center (CA) and an artist-in-residence at Willow House (TX)
She is an art rock musician who has written, recorded, and toured albums nationally since 2006.
