Holly Overton is a Brooklyn-based painter, musician and filmmaker from the Outer Banks, NC. Her work fixates on facades of marketed sentimentality of the beach and roses, simultaneously seduced by, yet aware of, their illusions. She received her BFA at Parsons School of Design in 2009.
She recently conceptualized a multi-media exhibition with artist Sarah Rozell, BROKEN AIR CONDITIONER. In a seaside brewery, they installed luxurious velvet curtains to obstruct the hugely windowed 2nd floor ocean view. The curtains emphasized the human tendency to in-authenticate natural environments, also functioning as the backdrop for their work on the subject.
Other recent exhibitions include the three woman show Her Ironic World at Dare Arts (NC) in 2022, Do Not Research curated by Josh Citarella at Lower Cavity in Holyoke (MA) in 2022; and New York City Symphonies of the Millennium Film Workshop at the Museum of Modern Art (NY) in 2022.
She has composed, recorded and toured nationally in art rock bands since 2006.
